My involvement with Makants has a sad beginning but a happy ending .
I've been owned by my lurcher Alf since he was 8 weeks old and he's now almost 14. During all that time, until the beginning of last year, I walked him with my dear friend Pat Warburton and her 3 greyhounds . Pat started volunteering at Makants and told me all about the great work they do and we started to make plans to go together. However, this wasn’t to be as sadly Pat’s health started to deteriorate and shortly afterwards she passed away. I knew how much Makants and the greyhounds meant to her so I was determined that I would still go and volunteer, and so that's when and why I started to visit the kennels .
It was the best thing I ever did, I found everyone very friendly and I was made to feel very welcome. I really enjoy the walks (even the rainy ones, honest!) and have made lots of very good friends. An added bonus is that all the fresh air and exercise does wonders for your mental and physical health.
In February this year while at kennels Siobhan introduced me to a very small black greyhound girl called Merle who looked lost and was wearing a coat that was about 3 sizes too big for her. My husband David was with me on this particular day and we both instantly fell in love with her on the spot! Of course we ended up adopting her and changed her name back to the original one of Pearl, or as she is known more often, 'Miss P’.
She's such a sweet natured girl and this year I decided to start taking her to fundraising events. She loves the fuss and attention she receives and I like the fact that we can help raise funds for her friends in kennels who are still waiting to find their forever homes. So from a very sad situation - the loss of a very dear friend - volunteering at Makants has helped me make lots of new friends and enabled some fantastic dogs to find their forever homes.
