My involvement with Makants was, I’m sure, due to a strange date with fate.
One weekend I decided to do my shopping in Leigh instead of my usual supermarket near work, and Makants volunteers were fundraising at the Pets at Home shop next to the supermarket. Having had dogs when I was younger, and always having loved dogs, I just couldn’t resist approaching the stall and petting the greyhounds! There I learnt about the great work the charity does and the ways volunteers could get involved. That was it I knew I had to get involved and I started walking the greyhounds with Makants in February 2016.
Previously I had looked into volunteering opportunities with other dog charities, but most of them were quite specific with times and dates, which I could not commit to due to my full time job. Makants offered me the opportunity and flexibility to volunteer only when I am available, and they are only 10 minutes drive away from my house!
For someone like me who loves dogs, lives alone, works long hours, and could not afford a doggy day care, I find this is the perfect way to get close and cosy with some lovely dogs!
I’ve been able to volunteer almost every weekend when work allows, it makes me alot happier just to have dogs in my life again.
I have made some good friends by volunteering with Makants and everyone I have met through the charity has been so nice and friendly, making the whole experience so much more enjoyable. Besides, it’s a really good motivation to get some exercise! I love walking the greyhounds (and always get some cuddles and kisses from them too).
