2017 has been a fantastic year for us and we have seen a few ‘firsts’ during the year too.
Our fundraising team attended 73 events from February to December, often in rather challenging weather conditions, but always with a smile on their faces.
We’re lucky to have had support from the younger generation in the form of Seb Whiteley who ran the mini Manchester run for us back in May, as well as support from the 1st Astley Birch Beavers group who we met in October.
We’ve had support and donations from social dog walking groups such as the Phoenix Greyhound Group and Hounds around Buckshaw and held our first ever social dog walk on 3rd September kindly supported by the Balcarres Arms in Aspull.
In June we held our successful annual fundraising comedy night in Atherton. We’ve also tried innovative ways of raising money ranging from a clothing donation to sponsored hearts on kennel hound Pat’s ‘fan club’ wall. Three of our volunteers – Fiona, Lydia and Wendy – also held two online auctions this year raising funds for the rescue
We’ve raised awareness of greyhounds as pets by attending the Great Global Greyhound walk in Worsley back in June. Trustee Sue Sewell visited and made links with the Golden State Greyhound Adoption Group in California back in July. Talking of links with overseas we had a visit from well known antipodean author and Mum to social media pup Pikelet, Calley Gibson in August too, leaving behind a ‘pawtrographed’ copy of her latest book.
Our ‘firsts’ this year were our social dog walk on 3rd September attracting 79 hounds and our dog show held in Astley Park in Tyldesley on 1st October. Both were very successful events.
We send our thanks to Geoff Hoppley who refurbished our old kennel block in Autumn providing improved and extra kennel spaces. We’ve appeared ‘in Love It’ magazine, the Leigh Journal and the Horwich advertiser spreading the word about our rescue and greyhounds in general.
In November we hit a milestone on the homing front when our 200th hound Dutch (now Daegan) found his forever home. Also in November we received a very welcome nomination from Petplan for Rescue team of the year - you’ll be the first to know if we win it!
During December we held our successful Xmas fair and also celebrated our fourth birthday.
Throughout the year we have been able to fundraise in conjunction with local Pets at Home stores and we are grateful to them for their continuing support. We also send thanks to Burns for their donation of food earlier in the year.
Before we finish there are many people working ‘behind the scenes’ to make Makants such a success and we send our thanks to our:
group of crafters who make dog coats, snoods and bandanas to raise funds for the rescue, to our army of walking volunteers, fundraising team, team of home checkers, foster carers, photographers, and those involved with social media, administration and finance.
Thanks also to you, our supporters, for your kind donations and unfailing support over the year.
2017 has been a fantastic year and we hope with your support 2018 will be even better. As we end our message we’ll leave you with the names of all the hounds who have found their forever homes through us this year:
