NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS’ WEEK 2018
Thanks to Susie for her account of volunteering at Makants:
At the end of summer 2017 I found myself with some free time and was looking for something to do. I had lost my own dog after 14 years and really missed walking every day - I tried getting out and about, but it just wasn’t the same without a dog. Then a friend suggested Makants, as she had seen the volunteers out walking the greyhounds. Due to my circumstances I couldn’t commit to owning a dog so this seemed like a good fit for me.
I checked out the website and saw that there was a fundraising event close to where I live. I went down and chatted with the volunteers who gave me some information and I arranged a visit to the kennels. After my first walk I knew Makants was the place for me. I loved it! Within a few days I was back and have been coming ever since.
There is a lovely community spirit amongst the volunteers and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon. Fresh air and exercise, chatting about life’s ups and downs or just laughing at the antics of the dogs on their daily walk, it really is a lot of fun!
I had no experience of greyhounds before joining Makants, but now I’m smitten. They are such gentle, sweet natured hounds and it is so nice to watch the new dogs grow in confidence and their true personalities develop. Siobhan and her team do a fantastic job caring for the greyhounds and one of my favourite things is hearing news that another dog has found a forever home. If I can help in some small way to prepare them for their new life, that’s definitely worth a few hours of my time.
Thanks Susie from all at Makants!
