Many thanks to Jess for sending in her volunteering story:
‘I first heard of Makants about four and a half years ago and began helping out by walking the hounds on my days off. It was during the walking that I immediately fell in love with kennel hound Snowie and I knew I just had to get my other half - Andrew - to meet him. Well, he loved him just as much as me and he’d been in kennels a while so we decided to try fostering.
We fostered him for a couple of weeks to see how he’d settle but we were then going on holiday for a week so he went back into kennels for holiday care. That week was the longest of my life! Me and Andrew spent the whole time talking about him and figuring out if we were ready for a dog full time. We decided we just couldn’t let someone else snap him up so we messaged Siobhan (while we were still away), saying don’t let anyone take him, we’ll adopt him when we come home! The rest, as they say, is history. He’s the best dog we could’ve hoped for, and he’s helped us with the many foster dogs we’ve had since, he’s just so accepting and takes them under his wing.
As well as fostering previously we were very involved in the fundraising side for a few years, educating people on greyhounds as a breed, raising much needed funds and taking Snowie along with us. Nowadays we’ve tended to stick to fostering due to our lad having had a spinal operation back in November last year. I’m pleased to say he’s recovered well and we all still enjoy fostering the lovely hounds that come into our care’.
**Thank you Jess, Andrew and Snowie for all you do for Makants!**
