NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS’ WEEK 2018
Thanks to Rob for this account of his volunteering activities with us:
“Early in 2017 I found myself without a dog for the first time in 35 years and, due to personal circumstances, I made the "sensible" decision not to commit to another at that time. Unsurprisingly, I really missed the daily companionship of a dog, but shortly afterwards I saw an appeal on Facebook for volunteer walkers. I duly went to Makants where I met Siobhan who made me very welcome, explained what was required and handed me a greyhound to walk! I spent a very enjoyable hour or so that day with some great volunteers and amazing hounds, and have been walking regularly ever since.
After a few months I started doing some part-time fostering, and that was quickly followed by full-time fostering. After a few more weeks I revisited my original decision and realised that, where greyhounds are concerned, life is too short to be "sensible", and I adopted the wonderful Jet who has now become a regular dog walker too!
Being involved with Makants brings a great sense of fulfilment and I would recommend volunteering without hesitation. The atmosphere is relaxed and it's great to be able to spend time with the hounds in their kennels after a walk, and to watch their development from when they arrive to when they go to a home, which of course makes it so worthwhile. Siobhan and all the volunteers are very welcoming and friendly, and the hounds so endearing, it's an absolute pleasure to spend time there. There is no pressure to do more than you can, and you always feel that whatever time you do give is really appreciated”.
Thanks Rob from all at Makants!
Rob is shown here with Jet on his adoption day in October last year.
